In the context of smart cities, energy management systems play a pivotal role in orchestrating efficient use, distribution, and optimization of energy resources to meet the diverse needs of urban populations while promoting sustainability and resilience of municipalities. However, the implementation of such application can be challenging, as there is no one-size-fits-all solution considering every project needs to take different climatic, political, geographical, and demographic conditions in different regions of the world into account. One needs to consider the differences in the understanding and the aim of a so-called “smart city” – what are the main challenges and reasons for a city when deciding to transform and digitalise its infrastructure and services?
In this seminar, we are looking into different concepts, tools, and solutions of energy management systems around the globe and discuss challenges, experiences, and success stories in break-out sessions. Actors such as CDP-ICLEI or H2Scout present their platforms and systems that are being used cross-regional. We are looking into use-cases for instance the energy management system used for the piloting project in West-Germany (Klimakommune.digital) and applications for CO2-balancing and facilitate great discussions during the break-out sessions with invited guests from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Chinese Society for Urban Studies (CSUS).
